BioRelease Meloxicam LA 750 mg/mL + 3mL diluent
Total Volume = 4 mL (2 - 4 dose vial)
Based on frequent requests from equine practioners BET Pharm is now compounding a long acting BioRelease Meloxicam formulation. Preliminary (third party) pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) data suggest a 72 to 96 hour release profile and associated anti-inflammatory activity.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are used for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antithrombotic, and antiendotoxic properties. It is now well known that there are two COX isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, and that the extent of NSAID-associated inhibition of COX-1 and COX-2 activities differs depending on the drug administered. Most NSAIDs inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 to various degrees; however, newer NSAIDs such as meloxicam are more selective for the COX-2 isoenzyme. Because of the greater COX-2 selectivity of meloxicam it may be associated with a decreased occurrence of adverse effects such as inhibition of platelet function, development of gastrointestinal tract ulcers, recovery of transepithelial barrier function in ischemia-injured equine jejunum and impairment of renal function.
> Many veterinarians use Meloxicam to effectively alleviate soreness and pain post surgery, post joint injection and post performance.
> Data from N.C. State suggests Meloxicam may be a useful alternative to flunixin meglumine for postoperative treatment of horses with colic.
> NSAID research suggests that Meloxicam is superior to other injectable NSAID’s with respect to negative effects on kidney and gastro intestinal problems as well as negative effects on blood clotting.
> Recent large clinical observation studies have shown improvement in lameness scores within six to 12 hours post treatment. Improvement typically lasts for three to four days following a single 2 mL intramuscular injection.
